Today we have guestblogger Meghan Folkner, our newest Esthetician. We are so pleased to welcome her to Verde and I thought you would enjoy some holiday tips for keeping your skin Happy and Bright…
Well it’s coming to that time of year again, the holiday season! We get fantastic weather, great holiday parties and don’t forget amazing food! Come January 1st we all realize what that food does to our waistline, but what about your skin? Have you noticed a few breakouts, or maybe some dull skin? Nutrition could be playing a major part in your skin concerns.
We often forget that our skin is the largest organ in the body and is one of the many places that our body chooses to release toxins from. This means nutrition is extremely important for healthy, glowing skin!
So what should you be eating and avoiding to achieve this? Well let’s start with sugar, it is many peoples enemy, including my own! It’s hard to resist, but get ready for some major motivation to really keep your intake down. Sugar spikes our blood glucose level, which means it is in our blood stream and over time when that spike occurs over and over it will actually affect our collagen bundles. What that means is now your depleting your collagen and elastin within your body, which contributes to wrinkles and sagging of the skin. So let’s all keep that in mind next time we want to go on a sugar binge. Lets talk about something that we should be having for healthy skin, antioxidants. A couple years back this was definitely the buzz word, but let’s not think of it as a fad, they pack a big punch! Free radicals are everywhere in this world, but our skin takes a big beating from a lot of them; the sun, pollution, pesticides, cigarette smoke and many others. Unfortunately these free radicals directly effect our DNA and speed up our aging process. Thankfully antioxidants help to combat these nasty free radicals, think of them as Ms. Pacman going through your body and chomping up the free radicals to rid them from your body. Remember antioxidants come of many yummy forms; all berries, cranberries, apples, artichokes, delicious dark greens, the list goes on!
How about a drumroll for on of the most important parts of your diet?! Water! Let’s go back to middle school and remember that our bodies are made up of more than 60% water. Our blood, organs, muscles, and skin all need water but unfortunately the skin is our bodies last priority to protect so when you don’t drink enough (and lets face it, almost no one does here in Arizona), your skin doesn’t get enough; hello dull, deprived skin! Water keeps our cells plump, which is something we all want, so how much water should you be drinking? Take your body weight, cut the number in half and add ounces to the end (ex. 100 lbs divided by 2 equals 50oz), but you already know that’s not it, don’t you? For every 30 minutes of moderate to intense exercise add 8oz, every caffeinated, or sugary beverage that’s another 8oz. It can really add up, but I promise you that if you challenge yourself to do this every day you will see an incredible difference in your skin, and your body too! A quick word of advice, please avoid the drink mixes that have unsafe artificial sweeteners in them. Just because there are no calories doesn’t mean that there are no side effects (but that’s a whole different blog post ;). If you don’t like water just add some fresh or frozen fruit to your glass for a great taste! Of course these are only a few effects that nutrition can have on skin, but they can really have a big impact!
