Believe me, I understand the joys of a good blowout. However, it has been fun to once again embrace my curls. I get asked a lot what I do to my hair for the curls. I will say, I wish they had the products they have now when I was in Jr. High! First, never never never brush your hair. This causes the curls to separate and frizz. Now, as a hairstylist, I like a big look. This flat, spaghetti curl everyone seems to be doing is not appealing. I personally LOVE Kimberely Schlapman’s hair from Little Big Town.
I oil my hair once or twice a week with whatever is handy. Grapeseed, olive, or coconut are usually my go-tos. When I am due to shampoo, I will coat my dry hair in oil, massage it into my scalp, and let it sit for 20-30 minutes before shampooing, then conditioning with AquaBoost Shampoo/Conditioner. I run 1/2t of AquaBoost Treatment through the bottom two-thirds of the strand and let this sit in the shower. Rinse and wrap in a towel. Right away, I put on O’Right’s Oolong Green Tea Moisturizing Cream and Giovanni’s Straight Fast Elixir. I cannot rave enough about the Moisturizing Cream! If there is ONE product I will never again be without, this is it. My hair stays soft and shiny, my curls stay defined with no frizz, but I can still get fullness out of it. (Straight Fast Elixir is a frizz serum with no plastics. Very often, the products to control frizz will have all kinds of silicone, which coats the hair and builds up. Organic Color Systems haircolor will not eat through the coating of plastic!) I have clients tell me that this is not “strong” enough or it doesn’t “stay on the hair”. This is simply because they are used to the feel of melted plastic coating the hair and sitting there. Straight Fast will actually soak into the hair. I also like O’Right’s Moisture Cream. It has a little hold, but still leaves hair soft. I wrap my hair back in the towel for 5-10 minutes after I put it on to let it settle. I use this time to do my makeup or get dressed.
From here, I will give it a shake and place the curls where I want them. If I have time to let it air dry, I’ll let it go, but most of the time I need to diffuse the base. I like the fullness that is created, but my hair is always silky soft. I run two droppers full of Organic Moroccan Oil through the curls to make them shiny. I curl with a ¾” or a 1” barrel curling iron if I want a dressy look or I want it to last several days. The curls soften over the days and I only wash every 4 days. (Maren and I have an ongoing competition to see who can go longer.) There are many great options for fun things to do with your curls, from a loose braid, a side bun with curls escaping, or a headband tight and close with curls erupting out the back. Rock the curls girls.
